Farrow & Ball, world renowned manufacturer of traditional decorative papers and paints, chose Ai Process Systems for their new water-based manufacturing facility


Farrow & Ball needed the expertise of a competent process engineering company when they decided to build a new bespoke paint manufacturing facility. Following a competitive tendering process, they opted for Ai Process Systems Ltd.

Farrow & Ball have a world–wide reputation for producing traditional wallpapers and colours of greater depth and high quality nishes This project provides a new manufacturing facility at their Wimborne plant near Poole in Dorset that is fully compliant with the forthcoming 2010 Climate Change legislation to reduce carbon emissions. The unique nature of the installation allows total exibility to continue producing some of the most environmentally friendly products available globally while facilitating future growth and range optimization.

The design challenge

The Ai team designed a manufacturing unit that incorporates process ow techniques that meet the highest possible standards and the latest speci cations. Ai met the challenge posed by the requirement to undertake the work within a restricted space and also to take into account likely future phases of development planned. While optimising plant e ciency primary focus remained on allowing ongoing extension of the Farrow & Ball range which scales from very traditional products through to the most modern available.

 

The Ai team, led by Contracts Manager, Jason Waldron, was responsible for:

  • The design and installation of a new prime manufacturing system supplemented by product let-down and holding vessels.
  • Associated raw materials storage and transfer equipment.
  • Finished base storage tanks.
  • A recipe driven process control system.
  • Associated services such as mezzanine floors, pipe work and electrical installation.
  • Dust extraction system compliant with legislation to control emissions.

 

Putting design into practice

Building work began in July 2007 and the manufacturing plant was in commercial operation by January 2008. The Ai team used their excellent coordination and project management skills to bring the scheme to a successful conclusion within agreed budgets and timescales.

 

The Ai team offers high level communications skills and e ective liaison with architects, builders and suppliers making them the company of choice for clients requiring experienced project management. Ai is well able to understand clients’ needs and communicate these requirements to other contractors involved in projects. Additionally Ai has an excellent reputation for working within con dentiality agreements.
